When considering purchasing a medical alert system, it is important that you choose one that is compatible with your home phone service provider. POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service)
POTS refers to a standard landline. Many US homes still have this kind of telephone service. Most medical alert systems are compatible with this kind of phone line. A standard landline is the most reliable kind of phone service to use with a medical alert system, as landlines tend to be more stable than cellular networks.

DSL Phone Service
Bay Alarm Medical System 1: Digital Phone Service
DSL is a Digital Subscriber Line. DSL works by transmitting data over your regular phone line. This kind of phone service can cause static interference when you’re using internet and other digital devices. If you have DSL and you want to setup a medical alert system, you will need to get a DSL filter. We have them available for purchase on our Accessories page. You DO NOT need a DSL filter if you have VOIP or a cable bundle type of phone service. You only would need a DSL filter if you specifically have DSL phone service in the home.

VOIP/Cable Phone Service
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) uses IP networks, usually through your internet, to place phone calls. If you have AT&T or Comcast, you most likely have a VoIP or a cable bundle type of phone service. A cable bundle refers to when you have your cable, phone, and internet running through a box (modem). If you want to purchase a medical alert system that is compatible with this kind of phone service, you’ll want to make sure it says “Digital phone service” somewhere in the name.
